Virginia Rose Spencer "Starky", 90, of Newton, IL passed away at 5:55 a.m., Monday, February 18, 2013 at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson, IL.
 

Funeral services celebrating Virginia's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2013 at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL with Rev. Louis Youngs officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton, IL. Visitation for family and friends will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time. In loving memory of Virginia, memorials may be made to the Jasper County Cancer Support Fund; Chapter FN of the P.E.O. Sisterhood Scholarship Fund or First Presbyterian Church. Virginia Rose was born on December 8, 1922 in Jasper County, IL the daughter of Wilmer and Edith (Kittle) Stark. She married her high school sweet heart Thomas Moore Spencer on March 25, 1942 in St. Charles, MO and he preceded her in death on June 27, 2012. Virginia was a 1940 graduate of Newton Community High School. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton; Chapter FN of P.E.O. Sisterhood; Ladies Auxiliary of the Jasper Post #20 American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary of the Newton VFW.  Virginia was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing bridge.
 

Virginia is survived by her children, Mark (Jennifer) Spencer of Mesquite, TX and Marsha (Phil) Gearing of Dallas, TX; six grandsons; one granddaughter; four great-grandsons and seven great-granddaughters. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband.

Larry Lee Scott, age 69 Of Newton, IL passed away at 11:55 AM – Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Private family service will be held at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL. Entombment will be in the Family Mausoleum at the Bethel Cemetery in Rural West Liberty, IL. Larry was born on June 30, 1943 in Jasper County, IL the son of Chester and Marie (Wells) Scott.

Larry married Deann Passalacqua on October 10, 1960 and she survives. Larry was a life-long oil producer and co-owner of Scott Oil Company. He enjoyed working and spending time with his family. Larry is survived by- Wife of 51 Years- Deann Scott of Newton, IL Son- Brad (Linda) Scott of Newton, IL Grandsons- Brandon Scott and Trevor Scott of Newton, IL Sisters - Arlene Bower of Newton, IL Beatrice “Short” (Larry) Kibler of Olney, IL Thelma (Dan) Bigard of West Liberty, IL

Dr. Thomas Spencer, 89, of Newton, IL passed away at 10:24 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at St Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Monday, July 2, 2012 at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL with Rev. Louis Youngs officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton, IL with full military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion. Visitation will be held 2 hours before the service. Thomas was born on August 7, 1922 in Olney, IL the son of Frank and Anna Kay (Kasserman) Spencer. He married Virginia Stark on March 25, 1942; she survives. Tom served his county in the United States Army during WWII. After the service Tom graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Tom returned to Newton and started his practice as a Doctor of Optometry. He served Newton and the surrounding area for many years before his retirement. Tom was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton; Jasper Post #20 American Legion; Newton Masonic Lodge #216 and the Elks. Tom had a love for golf. He was instrumental in starting the former Jasper County Country Club and was a charter member. He enjoyed gardening and raising flowers.
Tom was very active in the community. He had served on the board of directors for the Peoples State Bank and Jasper Jobs, Inc. Tom was instrument in bringing the former E.R. Moore Company to Newton. Tom was always giving back to the community that he served by supporting the Newton Sports programs. Tom was named Jasper County Citizen of the Year for his many acts of kindness and support to the community.

Tom is survived by his wife of 70 years, Virginia Spencer of Newton; son, Mark (Jennifer) Spencer of Mesquite, TX; daughter, Marsha (Phil) Gearing of Dallas, TX; six grandsons; one granddaughter; and nine great-grandchildren.

James Edward Bloomer, 68, of Newton, Illinois passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at his daughter’s home in Greenup, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the New Life Christian Center, Newton with Bro. Chris Parr officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 4, 2012 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Shiloh Cemetery, rural Willow Hill, Illinois. James was born on July 24, 1943 in Jasper County, Illinois the son of Hubert and Hazel (Curtis) Bloomer. On August 28, 1965, James married TimberlyAnn Brown; she preceded him in death on June 11, 2009. Jim served his country in the United States Army. He worked for Alcoa Aluminum for many years until his health no longer permitted. His memberships included the New Life Christian Center, Newton and the Arbor Day Foundation. Jim loved the Lord, his family, and nature.

He will be loved and remembered by four daughters, Dona Charleen Wilson-Tibi of Newton, Becky Ives of Decatur, Cindy (Sam) Mitchell of Greenup, and Amanda Richardson of Greenup; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; brothers, John Bloomer of Champaign and Irvin (Barb) Bloomer, of Cape Fair, MO; and sisters Leda Short of Willow Hill and Betty Walston of Decatur.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Timberly, and sisters Dena Staley and Ethelene Bloomer.

of Robinson, died at 3:47 p.m. Wednesday September 28, 2011 at his home.
 
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 1st at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Robinson with Father Aloysius Okey Ndeanaefo and Father Kurt Hartrich officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary of the Assumption Cemetery, Ste. Marie, IL. Military graveside services will be conducted by the combined units of the AmVets Post #33, V. F. W. Post #4559, Robinson American Legion Post #69, and Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30th at the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. He was born August 8, 1940 in Ste. Marie, IL, the son of Paul Joseph Hartrich and Clara McKimmy Hartrich.  He served in the U. S. Navy as a radarman on the U.S.S. Intrepid from 1958 to 1962. He carried mail for the United States Post Office for 22 years and was assistant Postmaster for 6 years and retired in 1995 after 28 years of service.  After retirement, Keith enjoyed more time with his family. He and Eileen began making yearly trips to Bonita Springs, FL, in 2008. Keith enjoyed playing and watching sports with his children. He received joy from watching his children and grandchildren grow. He was an active member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church. He participated as a communion minister, usher and altar server at daily mass. He and Eileen were Parish Pro-Life Coordinators since 1973. He was also a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Robinson American Legion Post #69. Keith married Eileen Ann Hardiek on April 16, 1966; she survives.
 
Paul is survived by his wife, Eileen Ann (Hardiek) Hartrich of Robinosn; six sons and daughters-in-law, Brett and Jamie Hartrich of Bloomington, Bruce and Libby Hartrich of Greenwood, IN, Louis & Morgan Hartrich of Normal, Matthew Hartrich of Robinson, Christopher & Roxanne Hartrich of Bloomington, Justin Hartrich of Eureka, MO; three daughters, Lisa Boehl (Christopher), Michelle & Sharon Hartrich-Jackson, all of Bloomington, Lori Hartrich of Chicago; twenty-five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Vincent and Kathy Hartrich of Bloomington, Bill Hartrich of Ste. Marie, Rick and Marilyn Hartrich of Olney, Ted and Susan Hartrich of Robinson, Jim and Debra Hartrich of Morton, IL; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn Hartrich of Olney, Ruth and Don Matheny of Olney; and, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nancy Deeter.

Darrell D. Cornwell, 69, of Newton, Illinois passed away at 5:10 p.m., Thursday, August 26, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family.

Cremation rites will be accorded to Mr. Cornwell.  A time of visitation and memorial will be held on Monday, August 30, 2010 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Crain Funeral Home, Newton.

Darrell was born on May 3, 1942 in Newton, Illinois the son of Claude and Nell (Corder) Cornwell.  He served his country during Vietnam in the U. S. Army.  On May 22, 1966, Darrell married Judy Ann Meeks; she survives. Darrell serviced and installed televisions and antennas in the Newton area.  He was a musician and enjoyed playing the steel and electric guitar.

He will be loved and remembered by his wife Judy Cornwell of Newton; daughters, Kimberly (Richard) Smith and Kelly (Scott) Lewis, both of Newton; three grandchildren; and sisters Laura Dorrough of Effingham and Wilma Langley of Robinson.

Donna S. (Earnest) Nelson, 66, of Troy, Illinois died August 17, 2010 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, MO.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Troy United Methodist Church, Troy, IL with the Rev. Dennis Price officiating. Interment was in the Sunset Hill Cemetery, Glen Carbon, IL. Arrangements are under the care of the Laughlin-Richeson Funeral Home, Troy, IL. She was the wife of Paul E. Nelson of Troy, IL. Donna was born in Newton, Illinois on October 14, 1943. Donna was a devoted wife and mother. She was an Elementary School Teacher with the Collinsville School District. Donna was a member of the Troy United Methodist Church, Troy, Illinois; graduate of Eastern Illinois University, Class of 1965; a 25 year volunteer and two time past president of the Anderson Hospital Auxiliary, and member of United Methodist Women. Donna was a life-time servant to her church, and volunteer for many school and community activities.

She is survived by her husband, Paul E. Nelson of Troy; son, Craig A. (Judy) Nelson of Collinsville; grandchildren, Ryan and Ethan Nelson of Collinsville; brother, Larry (Patty) Earnest of Newton; sister, Carolyn (Robert) Guilander of Collinsville; mother-in-law, Mary Nelson of Troy; brother-in-law, Lloyd (Sharon) Nelson of St. Louis, MO.; nieces and nephews, David, Brad, Pam. Deborah and Diane, and nine (9) great nieces and nephews.

Donna was preceded in death by a son, Mark A. Nelson and her parents, Victor and Lois (Kennedy) Earnest.

George "Roy" Dhom, 66, of Newton, Illinois passed away at 3:35 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM - Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL.  Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Newton, IL.  Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM - Friday, March 19, 2010 at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's choice or for masses.

George better know as "Roy" was born on November 13, 1943 in Jasper County, IL the John and Doris (Burwell) Dhom.  He married Linda Bell on June 16, 1962 and she survives. Roy was retired from Briggs.  He was a member of the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton.  He enjoyed playing music, gardening, fishing, hunting and just being in the woods.

Dr. Marc A. Stierwalt, D.P.M., 67, of Murphysboro and formerly of Newton, Illinois passed away at his home in Murphysboro, at 6:10 p.m., Friday, January 22, 2010.
 
It was his request for his body to be donated to the School of Medicine.  Friends may call at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, on Saturday, January 30, 2010, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a short memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Marc was born on October 29, 1942, in Evansville, Indiana, to Gibson H. Stierwalt and Helen M. (Funkhouser) Stierwalt. He was an outstanding basketball player and received a basketball scholarship at both the Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama, and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. After graduation, he went to the Illinois College of Podiatry in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Stierwalt practiced podiatry in Southern Illinois for almost forty years. He loved nature and being outdoors, but he will be especially remembered for his love for gardening and then donating the vegetables to the local food bank. Marc married Sharon Keller on August 17, 1968, in Ste. Marie, IL; she survives. Newton was Dr. Stierwalt's hometown from 1952 until he graduated from Podiatry School in 1969.

Marc is survived by his wife, Sharon (Keller) Stierwalt; two children, Barbara Stierwalt of Murphysboro and Kurt (Diane) Stierwalt of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Caleb Clover, Connor Stierwalt, Kira Stierwalt, and Kate Stierwalt; one sister Helen Buck of Patoka, IL and one brother Robert Stierwalt of Roseville, CA.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents.
 
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for memorials to be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Andrew's School in Murphysboro.

Name: Robert William "Bobby" Kerner

robertkerner.jpgRobert William "Bobby" Kerner, 66, of Black Hawk, South Dakota passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at his residence.

Memorial services were held on Monday, January 4, 2010 at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City with Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating. Inturnment was in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military rites by TREA Chapter 29 of Rapid City.

Bobby was born March 9, 1943 to Robert F. Kerner and Wilma L. Kerner in Effingham, IL. He graduated from Newton High School in 1961. Upon graduation, Bobby enlisted in the United States Air Force and served from September 1961 until his retirement in December 1983. In October 1963, Bobbie married Lucille Wilken. Bobby and Lucille had three children, Deborah, Brenda and Robert Kerner. Bob joined the United States Air Force in 1961 and was sent to Lackland AFB, for basic training. He later attended jet engine mechanic training and continued in this career field during his entire Air Force tenure. He served at various Air Force Bases within the United States and overseas. Bobby's last duty assignment was Ellsworth AFB where he retired in December 1983 at the rank of Master Sergeant.

Bobby's decorations include: Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 2ea Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon, and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.

After Bobby's retirement, he was employed at Big A Auto Parts and worked part-time at Ellsworth AFB Bowling Alley from 1983 to 1994. In 1990, Bobby began working at the South Dakota Cement Plant and retired with 17 years in May 2007. He was a life member of the Retired Enlisted Association and was an active member of TREA.

Bobby's family was most important to him. Bobby was a dedicated family man and a patriotic individual who had served his country with honor, pride and devotion. Bobby enjoyed four wheeling in the Black Hills and feeding the deer and turkey on his land. He enjoyed spending time working in his yard with his wife Lucille.

Grateful for having shared Bobby's life include his father, Robert F. Kerner, step-sister, Clara Elaine Kitchen, wife, Lucille Kerner, daughter, Deborah Wells with husband, William and grandchildren, Randy Birdwell, Tarrise Wells, Tyler Birdwell, Elana Wells, and Hailie Wells; daughter, Brenda Kerner and significant other, Rick Scheehan, son, Robert A. Kerner with wife Lisa Kerner and grandchilren, Michaela Kerner and Chance Kerner.

Bobby was preceded in death by his beloved step-mother, Eloise (Addis) Kerner and step-brother, Gary J. Kerner and mother, Wilma (Smith) Bryom.  A memorial has been established. Friends may sign Bobby's online guestbook at www.kirkfunerahome.com.

Delane was born on October 22, 1938 in Olney, IL the son of Ray and Anna O. (Knackmuhs) Cleaver.  He married Karen Floken on September 14, 1958; she survives. Delane worked at the First National Bank in Newton for 40 years and was the Executive Vice President.  He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Newton, Newton Masonic Lodge #216; 32 degree mason and member of the Valley of Danville Consistory and a Shriner and member the Ainad Temple. Delane enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping and tinkering in his garage.

Delane is survived by wife of 51 years, Karen Cleaver of Newton; one son, David (Missy) Cleaver of Newton; one daughter, Julie (Michael) Shelton of Winnetka; one sister, Carol (Leon) Redman of Olney; five grandchildren, Josh (Andrea) Cleaver, Jessica (Tim) Harris both of Newton; Steven Shelton, Michelle and Hayley Shelton all of Winnetka; three great-grandchildren, Payton and Parker Harris of Newton and Nolen Cleaver of Newton.

Delane was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Jarret David Cleaver on February 4, 2009.

In loving memory of Delane, memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or American Cancer Society.

Jerry Zimmerman, 69 of Gun Barrel City passed away Sunday August 3, 2008 at home. Jerry was born in Robinson IL on June 15, 1939. Jerry worked as a Chemist for companies such as Staley's, St. Regis Paper, DixieCo and Huntsman for many years until retirement in 1998. After retirement, Jerry focused on his primary interests of fishing, wood working and golf. Jerry enjoyed his weekly golf outings with his friends and currently holds the Cedar Creek record for the largest Sand bass! Survived by his Wife Josephine of Gun Barrel City. Two daughters, Julie Zimmerman of Sydney Australia, Jennifer Bogdanowicz of Haslet, TX. Jerry had one step son - Donald Ragusa, one son in law Paul. Jerry had 2 grandchildren, Anthony and Christopher Ragusa. Jerry's brothers include Gene Zimmerman and Max Zimmerman both of Decatur IL as well as his step-mother Floris Zimmerman of Newton IL. Comments: He was in Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney. Mr. Connor will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Dr. John M. Connor and his wife, Betty, of Owensboro, KY. and Victor C. Connor and his wife, Carol, of Olney; daughter, Mollie Colleen Connor, of Springfield;
eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.  Mr. Connor was born October 16, 1920, in Newton, the son of Victor O. and Cora B. Smith Connor. He married Mollie E. Beaty on December 30, 1940. She preceded him in death on August 25, 2002.  He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ledora Leggitt. 

During World War II, he served his country as a first-class gunner's mate in the U.S. Navy. He owned and operated Connor Construction Company until his retirement. His memberships included Veterans of Foreign Wars, Jasper Post No. 20 of the American Legion, and Newton Masonic Lodge No. 216 A.F. and A.M.  He was buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Newton with military rites by Jasper Post No. 20.

It should be noted that he was especially good at Wampus Cat and left a lot of neighbor kids with fond memories or their early days.
